Lemon Brownies are going to blow your mind, they are one of my all-time favorite desserts!

Today I am going to tell you how to make these little squares of lemony heaven!

I love lemon desserts, given the choice, I will always choose lemon.  If there is a lemon dessert on the menu you can bet I’m choosing that over any chocolaty dessert they have to offer.

I think my love of lemon comes from my grandma, we share a fondness for lemon filled doughnuts and lemon sherbet.

Lemon Brownies are the absolute BEST dessert. Perfect lemony flavor and a glaze to die for, these are my favorite easy dessert!

Anytime I make a lemon dessert I instantly remember being a little girl in a red bathing suit with a dripping wet ponytail from swimming in my grandparent’s pool all day, I’m standing in the street on the 4th of July watching fireworks the men were setting off and my grandma comes out with a tray of her lemon bars and they are amazing.

I just stand there enjoying the lemony bars while fireworks and lightning bugs light up the summer sky, every year the same and every year just as magical.

Now on to a little secret, yes I am food blogger, yes I wrote a cookbook, and yes my grandma has taught me many of her recipes, but no I cannot make a decent lemon bar to save my life!!  I can make lemon curd, lemon cheesecake, but lemon bars fail every time.

So I gave up, I mean my grandma makes them all the time in the summer so I would just wait till then.

Then I stumbled upon these Lemon Brownies and they are amazing!  So easy to make, just mix them up, pop them in the pan and bake!  They are not cakey at all, they have a fudgy texture.

You top these Lemon Brownies with a simple lemon glaze that gets all crackly and makes these utterly addicting.

I try not to make these too often because I will end up eating the whole pan, they are that irresistible!!

I swear these are my new favorite dessert and since you can pretty much make them with your eyes closed they are dangerous!!

Can I double the recipe?

Yes!  Just use a 9×13 pan instead.  It probably is a good idea to double the recipe because you are going to want seconds!

Do I have to use fresh lemon?

I am all for shortcuts in the kitchen but please step away from the yellow squeezy bottle of lemon juice and buy some real lemons, they make all the difference!

How to make these Lemon Brownies

  1. In the bowl of an electric mixer, beat the flour, sugar, salt, and softened butter until combined.
  2. In a separate bowl, whisk together the eggs, lemon zest, and lemon juice until combined. Pour into the flour mixture and beat at medium speed until smooth and combined.
  3. Pour into baking dish and bake for 25 minutes.
  4. Allow to cool completely before glazing.
  5. When brownies are cooled completely, make the glaze by whisking together all three ingredients.
  6. Spread over the brownies cut into bars.

  2. i love lemons and lemon flavoured anything (basically), well… maybe not bugs and weird things, but things that most people would thing are edible and delicious and i love brownies. so this combination seems perfect and fitting for me. Thanks for sharing. Also… I hope this doesn’t come out in all caps lock as it is showing that way for me, and I am not shouting this post comment, but for some reason I can’t seem to get it to turn off.

  5. Just put the glaze on…better go hide them or I might eat the whole pan. Excellent and just the lemon dessert I needed for Easter. Thanks.

  6. I love your Lemon Brownies so much! I actually bake them whenever I have to bring dessert to a party – and people LOVE it. I even had to translate your recipe into German for a friend.5 stars

  7. This is such a wonderful recipe! I have tried 3 other lemon brownie recipes, and yours is the best. I use 1 large lemon and a stick grater to get every single piece of yellow rind I can and add it ALL to the glaze. I also increase the glace ingredients by 50%. These brownies are always such a hit. People rave and often request the recipe. They are now my go-to fave gift-treat for hostess/drop-in/neighbor/thank yous. I haven tried, but I need to start making them in double batches in a 9 x 13. You say that would work, but have you tried it? Would the baking time still 30 minutes? Thanks for such a great recipe!! – Cheers!

  8. Hello! I stumbled across your lovely post – looking for a lemon brownie recipe. I loved reading about your special bond with your grandma and her lemon bars. You are a great writer! I too share a love of lemon sweets with my grandma (and she taught me how to bake my first cookie). I would LOVE to send her your lemon brownies, as she is 92 and does not bake anymore. Do you think the crackly glaze would set up enough to ship, or would it liquify once wrapped in plastic for the journey? I would love some suggestions, and can’t wait to try the recipe!!
